  Rent question

  i have a question was wondering if anyone knew the answer to... .

  i rent month to month.. have been here 8 years... the person who owns the property came by last night to inform me and others that the rent has went up $70 and is to be added to march 1st payment.. what i am wondering is.... it seems that he should have gave us a months notice before it went into effect.. do you know if that is the law or not?...

  i live in indiana if that helps... .

  I am in Indiana - rural Indiana. I know of no law against what he did - but I think you should check the options mentioned above.

  Seems like $70 is pretty significant increase - was there a change in owners? I know that if you have a lease [and I wonder if 8 years in the same place does not qualify somehow as an 'assumed lease'] there is a requirement that terms of the lease cannot be changed for so long in the case of ownership changes.

  Seems like a quick call to the county courthouse or city hall would put you in touch with the right person in your area to resolve rent issues.

  Blondie - you are dead on. Unfortunately I think that most witnesses only understand 'conditional love'.

  Wifey and I have not even been DF'd or Da'd - yet not a single witness 'friend' will speak with us any longer. You are right - they were never friends to start with - just 'religious companions'.

  Once you disagree with the witness club - you are out of the club. Just like 5 year olds.

  JWs and Clothing

  where i live, its not usual for people to "dress up," especially business people and executives, you are more likely to see them with a button up shirt, khakis, and one of those fleece vests on.

  so, on the whole, jws look very out of place wearing their cheap suits (though a few elders didn't wear cheap suits and they made that known, "look at this, i got a spot on my new $200 designer shirt" -- really, something like this happened).

  but what i did notice is that, in my area, dressing guidelines usually weren't followed, or enforced for that matter, for good looking women.

  Never wore heels, or "dressed for work in an office" as recommended

  Wifey is an office manager. She wears slacks every day to work.

  But that argument never would cut any mustard with the elders at the hall when we were in the organization. I never see business people that dress like witnesses, except it seems some lawyers. Since it is a 'legalistic theocracy' .... I guess the dress code is correct.

  So at the big "A", if God judges based on how we dressed, does that mean that only lawyers and witnesses will remain? I guess that would be fitting! [No offense to lawyers on this board intended - we still love you guys]

  jw's at least *try* to have scriptural backing for all their little doctrines.

  it may only be two obscure references to two cultures a thousand years apart celebrating a birthday, but at least they've got *something*.. have you ever known them to pony up any sort of biblical reference to justify the formation of a "judicial committee"?

  i know they have their pet shunning scriptures, but that's after the committee meets and decides to axe you.

  Valis - Good work on the references!

  No wonder that one comment was made on this board about a visitor to a Kingdom Hall that asked if these people think they are decendants of the Jews. But if one is desirous of promoting a legalistic society, and basing it on the Bible as reference, it would make sense to defer to the OT and it's law-driven approach.

  But the point remains - that even if the Jewish practices under the law were the correct basis for Christian custom and organization - the WTS does not do it at all like the Jewish nation did it.

  And as Almost points out; there is simply not a single NT reference that would support anything of the sort.

  Using Acts 20:28 to support judicial committee's is tantamount to using John 17:3 to support the idea that 'knowledge that leads to everlasting life' comes out of the WTS.

  Oops! They do twist interpret it that way, don't they? Silly me!

  ok, so since sng suggested this (in the "intelligent design" thread), let's take a shot, eh?.

  take a human baby, immediately from the womb; provide every physical need, but absolutely no direct contact whatsoever!

  no faces, no voices, no sounds, no other humans, no animals, no trees and leaves and flowers--just a pure and simple newborn, clean slate.. would this baby naturally develop a language, some language, any language?.

  why is everything in dub-land put through the "pagan" filter.

  it hasn't resulted in a better "dub", they're a vile bunch as a whole.. .

  example: what if someone out of the goodness of their heart and for no apparent reason wanted to celebrate (say without the traditional cake w/candles) the "birthday" of their child.

  The Hebrew God did not choose a nation to be his people for many centuries after Adam. So all the mundane activities of life originated in pagandom didn't they?

  wifey and i enjoyed it - but the grandaughter didn't like it!

  oops - I forgot two ingredients 20 Brussel Spouts 2 Tbsn Balsamic Vinegar 2 Tbsn Pure Extra Virgin Olive Oil 2 Tbsn Any flavor jam [I used blackberry] handful of Roasted almonds 1/4 pound diced ham 2 slices [diced] onion Also 1 TBSN Honey and 1 Tbsn Molasses - Sorry about that!! Jeff

  Just a recipe to share if u want to try something a little different. I made it up - and we tested the trial for supper - very tasty! Wifey and I enjoyed it - but the grandaughter didn't like it! {and wifey doesn't like brussel sprouts} Sweet and Sour Almond Brussel Sprouts 20 Brussel Spouts 2 Tbsn Balsamic Vinegar 2 Tbsn Pure Extra Virgin Olive Oil 2 Tbsn Any flavor jam [I used blackberry] handful of Roasted almonds 1/4 pound diced ham 2 slices [diced] onion Clean and split in half the Sprouts, and onion. Boil for 5 minutes - then simmer for another 8 or 10 in a saucepan with water covering fully. Cook till tender and crisp. Drain well. In a saucepan, mix balsamic vinegar, olive oil, jam and ham. Simmer for a couple minutes then add the sprouts and onion, stirring well. Heat till well blended and hot. Remove from fire and add the almonds to suit. Put chow mien noodles over the individual servings. makes about 3 servings. No responsibility claimed, or promises.

  what is bethel, how do you go there and what do you do there?

  Zen-

  What you wrote about the movie reminds me of another flick - Logan's Run. Very similar theme - the eternal reward just turns out to be Death, a fancy death of course. Logan escapes and finds that all that he thought he knew was a lie - similar plot.
